Collecting Outhouse Postcards!

This page is about how to collect outhouse cards.

If you are interested in collecting outhouse postcards yourself, the most inexpensive place to do it is at postcard shows. Keep an eye in your paper or pick up one of the postcard collector magazines. Most of the color linen textured cards from the 40's and the smooth color cartoon cards from the 50's will cost from 50 cents up to $5, depending on condition and rarity. The real photo postcards from the 1910's to the 40's usually go around $5 to $8 each.

Another great place to find outhouse postcards is on the web - the online auctions. Cards tend to go for much higher in the auctions, but it's very conveinant and the variety is super! It's a great way to "fill in the blanks" in your collection, but you must realize that many of the folks selling them are not dealers or collectors, and might not give accurate descriptions of the condition of the cards, or package them properly for shipping.

The web also has many great postcard dealers, and many will send you cards on approval - you pay for what you like and send the rest back. This is a painfree way to get higher quality cards. See my links below for some super on-line dealers.

e-Bay On-line Auction e-Bay is the biggest and the best of the on-line auctions. Type in "outhouse" in the search box, and you will be amazed with what you find. Don't you dare out-bid Michiesminis on anything juicy!!!

Playle Postcard Auctions Playle also covers other paper collectables. This auction has one advantage - the time until end of auction starts with the first bid.

Memory Lane Postcards Friendly, efficiant, and great quality cards. These folks are a dream to work with.

If you get into collecting postcards, try to store them safely. If you use notebooks with pocket pages, make sure you get PVC free pages that will not damage or yellow your cards in a few years. Storing them in boxes is safe if the box was made for archival storage.

Extra or poor quality and common cards look great framed in the bathroom! I use a nice textured colored paper for a background, and mount the cards with clear postcard/photo corners (you can find these in craft stores in the memory book section). Bathrooms with high humidity might cause damage in the long run, as will exposure to sun or bright lights, so make sure you aren't displaying any rare ones.
