Outhouses Photos

I only show outhouses I've photographed myself, or friends have photographed for me, as there are plenty of excellent web pages and books out there that don't need me to copy their jpg's!

snow outhouse

My husband and I happened to be in Frankenmuth, Michigan one weekend during a snow sculpture competition, and were lucky enough to have the camera with us! I sure hope this one brought in first prize! I don't remember the year (94, 95?), and have no details on this.

outhouse at barn

We took an apartment for a few months during the winter in 98/99 close to Greg's work, as it was a 90 mile commute one way. The apartments were in an old converted barn in rural PA. This little building was right next to the mail boxes, and not locked. I just KNEW it had to be an outhouse - why would you bother with slate roofing shingles and vented windows on a storage shed?

Inside

window veiw

Sure enough - this is the beauty on the inside. The seats are now covered with nailed down plywood, and the detail doesn't show in my photos, but the paneling is gorgeous bead-board. I've never seen a "kiddie seat" built in like this one before!

This does make me ponder though - the barn and the farm house were huge - there must of been a giant family, farm hands, etc. I hope there was more than one of these on the property back then! And I bet those two windows, right across from each other, were COLD in the winter... I am truly grateful I collect outhouses and don't NEED outhouses!

Virginia Virginia

Here's 2 lovely views of an outhouse my friend Judy in Virginia sent me. A touch drafty, but I'm sure you have your privacy!

Leon Leon

My great friend Mary's brother Leon owns and uses this beauty. Yes - you are seeing this correctly - there is no door. If you go out the back door of his house and the toilet paper isn't sitting on the porch, the "biffy" is occupied...

Leon

This is Leon's veiw from the throne. It's swamp, so it's really private. Really.

Composting toilet

This is a composting toilet in my friend Diane's cabin, before the vent was installed. After an overflow problem (yeech!), the vent fixed it up. OK, it's not an outhouse, but it's a cool alternative to the "flush", and I've never seen such a roomy bath in my life!!!

One of the coolest things about having a website is that you get to meet so many great people with the same tastes (or lack thereof!). I just got e-mailed these faboo photos from Norma Goff. These pictures are of a friend's biffy deluxe in West Virginia.

Here's one from early 2003, sent to me from Edel in North Dakota. This one (with mens, ladies, and storage for coal and wood) sits by the cemetary, where there use to be a church.
